Matt Tizzard (DartsMatt) joins Loxley as Partnered Coach

Loxley Darts is delighted to announce that Matt Tizzard, the coach behind DartsMatt, has joined Loxley as our partnered coach for the 2026/2027 season. Matt already throws Loxley, and over the next year he will be bringing his coaching, his content and his infectious enthusiasm for the game to the Loxley community.

For those of you who do not know Matt yet we asked him to tell us a little about himself and the work that he  loves.

What attracted you to a partnership with us?

I have been collecting Loxley for a while (Hoods, Robins and Bishops), so this feels like a really natural fit. I love the quality and reliability of Loxley Darts and the culture they embody, I really appreciate their player-first  approach.

What's your approach to coaching and how do you get started with a player?

Ask ten coaches for the perfect stance, grip and throw and you may well get ten different answers. My view is simple: there is no single correct way to throw a dart, only the right way for the player in front of me.

Every player arrives with their own body, their own strengths and limitations. I start by understanding all of that. I look at how a player moves, what their body will and will not let them do comfortably, and the habits they have built up over hundreds of league nights and thousands of practice sessions or are looking to develop if they are new to the game.

From there, I work on the fundamentals: stance, grip, set-up, alignment, pull back and release.

Fundamentals have a direct impact on biomechanics, and the fundamentals a player uses need to match the biomechanics that player actually has. Rather than forcing everyone into the same template, I tailor any change so that the fundamentals and the body work together, and I only make changes where they will genuinely maximise the performance of the throw. For long-standing players especially, that means respecting what already works and refining it, not tearing it down.

And who do you train, is it just experienced players?

I work with a wide range of players, from leading JDC talent and players pushing towards MODUS and the professional game, to complete beginners throwing their first darts.

I offer both online coaching, to players from all over the world, and face-to-face sessions from my coaching studio in Worcester, England. Finally, I am available for Exhibitions and will be next "on stage"; with PDC Professional Danny Lauby next month for a Darts Clinic at the Flitwick Centre.

It is often those newer players who bring me the most joy. A first 180. A first league match down the pub. A first win. Nothing gets me buzzing more than picking up a WhatsApp notification from a player sharing one of those moments.

Can you provide a bit more detail on the mechanics of your coaching process?

For developing and improving players, and for those looking to step up a level, I use a marginal gains  approach. Small, measurable improvements across many areas of the game add up to a real difference on the oche.

My approach blends three things:

  • Performance data from competitions, leagues or online, showing what is really happening when it counts.
  • Training data from structured practice and benchmarking, so progress is tracked rather than guessed.
  • In-depth psychological frameworks that help players manage pressure, stay present and execute their best throw when it matters.

The psychological side is something I have written about in depth. I am the author of Little Mental Frameworks for Better Darts, a practical guide to the mental game built around simple frameworks players can take straight to the board.

Underpinning all of it is my Master of Science in Process Management. It drives my core belief that practice, and darts itself, is a process, and that process can be worked on and improved both at home and in the venue.

And how did you start off, what led you to this coaching role?

I began coaching golf at the age of 16 alongside professionals Maurice Campbell and Will Tebbs at Leighton Buzzard, helping out with the juniors. That led me to work with Jamil Qureshi, the sports psychologist at the 2006 Ryder Cup, first as his student and later in business, building up a deep knowledge of the frameworks and approaches that unlock peak performance in execution-based sports.

As a player, I went on to compete in national and county tournaments, reaching a handicap of +3 at my peak. In my 20s, I set out to transfer that academic approach, and the technical understanding I gained from studying The Golfing Machine, into darts. That journey is what brings me to where I am today.

What qualifications and certifications do you hold?

  • MSc in Process & Quality Management
  • PDPA Licensed Level 1 Darts Coach
  • SightRight Certified Coach
  • Professional Certificate in Sports Psychology (Youth)
  • Author of Little Mental Frameworks for Better Darts
  • Enhanced DBS checked

If we asked the players you coach about you, what would they say?

That I am very driven, but at the same time friendly, positive and approachable. I am open about everything I do in darts, and my own journey in the game is captured, vlogged and diarised on the DartsMatt YouTube channel, which now has just over 12,500 subscribers. I also run a large newsletter through DartsMatt.com and the YouTube channel, host the Execute darts podcast and run the DartsMatt Live event each year.

And whats coming up next?

Throughout 2026/2027, look out for coaching content from me featuring Loxley, with practical advice to help players of every standard get more from their game. I can't wait to share it with the Loxley community.
